MCing is the art of rapping. MC stands for ‘master of ceremonies’, and that is exactly what MC’s were. Early rappers were simply there to host the party. In the early days of hip hop the DJ was the main attraction. Hip Hop started when DJ Kool Herc came to New York, from Jamaica in 1970. Herc invented the ‘break beat’, which allowed for easier dancing because of a continuos beat. Kool Herc brought with him, from Jamaica, a style of talking over tracks called ‘toasting’. DJ’s had been toasting over reggae rhythms in Jamaica for several years and Herc copied this style and while playing sets would pump up the crowd by shouting things like, “Throw your hands in the air / and wave them like you just don’t care!†This was known as ‘rapping to the crowd’. Kool Herc invited his friends Coke La Rock and Clark Kent to MC for him while he cut up break beats, and this became the first rap group, called Kool Herc and the Herculiods. Other groups started copying the Herculiods and the rest is hip hop history.
At first the raps were simple, but as time pasted groups had to evolve their styles to stay ahead of the rest. Some MC’s started doing a style called beat-box, by vocally copying the sounds that a DJ could make on the turntables. Beat-boxing is considered the hardest thing an MC can do, and only a handful of MC's have mastered the beatbox. MC’s soon became the the headliners at shows and people would come to clubs and parties to hear different groups and MC’s battle each other with rhymes. ‘Freestyling’ was the most popular form of finding out who was the best rapper. MC’s would make up lyrics on the spot, which where often offensive to the person they were battling. Nowadays MC’s raps are very intricate and a lot more complicated than the simple ‘rock the crowd’/ throw your hands in the air’ raps of the late 1970’s and early 80’s. Instead my rappers use their talents to tell the stories of the ghetto ills and personal tribulations, but the freestyle remains the number one way of finding out who's the best

...The act of rhyming to the beat of music was called emceeing. The term rap seemed to be associated with hip hop around 1979 with release of two records in '79. The first was called King Tim III [Personality Jock] which is considered Hip Hop's first record. This was track put out by the Brooklyn based Fatback Band. The song itself was said to be inspired by old rhyme styles of Black radio djs like Jocko Henderson, Jack The Rapper and Daddy O and the rhyme styles of well known club djs like DJ Hollywood. The second was 'Rapper's Delight' by Sugar Hill Gang. I'm not quite sure how Sugar Hill came up with the term 'Rap'. Some say it was already being bantered about within the mainstream media who were then mystified by this new phenomenon. Others say that the term was coined by older folks within the community who saw similarities between young hip hoppers from the '70s and the word manipulators of earlier generations where the term rap was used.

The First Hiphop Albums Were Mixtapes! The MCs begin to gain skill and recognition for their rhyming ability and their ability to control and move the crowds with their chants. At this time DJ's begin putting together the first mixed tapes. Mixes and blends of the days great music selections and rare grooves. Party mix-tapes...essentially just recordings of parties they did onto cassettes. People payed upwards of $20 to get their hands on these gems. They contained rhymes and raps as well as chants and breaks. So, long before the first commercially released Hiphop Album, there were mix tapes. The mix tapes were the Albums... since the record companies weren't ready to accept hiphop as a proper form of music...or at least not as a profitable one. But soon the explosive growth of the Hiphop Movement would catch their attention.

EMCEEIN:" (The study and application of rhythmic talk, poetry and divine speech). Commonly referred to as rappin or Rap. Its practitioners are known as emcees or rappers. The emcee is a Hip Hop poet who directs and moves the crowd by rhythmically rhyming in spoken word. The emcee is a cultural spokesperson. Technically, the emcee is a creation of his/her community whereas the rapper is a creation of his/her recording corporation.
The word emcee comes from the abbreviated form of Master of Ceremonies (M.C.). In its traditional sense, M.C. referred to the hosting of an event the master of a ceremony or an event.
In its ancient sense, to emcee meant to pray or to communicate with God. It was used by the Greeks to communicate with their oracles and to pray to their gods.
The earliest known forms of Emceein were done by the ancient priest, sages and philosophers of Africa and Asia. Later in history, the ancient art of Emceein would be practiced by African griots and djelees as they went from village to village teaching (or rather performing) history and important life lessons.
Emceein (or rhythmic speech/divine speech) also appears at the genesis of human awareness. It is the language of the heart.
Early Hiphoppas transformed the traditional character of the Master of Ceremony to include crowd participation routines and poetry. Today, the emcee seeks to be a master of the spoken word, not just the best rapper or poet.
Emceein (when properly understood) manipulates air through sound vibration in an attempt to alter or expand consciousness.
Emcees also deliver lectures and other forms of public instruction. Most emcees rate themselves on their ability to rock a party, speak clearly and/or tell a good story.
Know this. A talented emcee almost always becomes a respected rapper. But a talented rapper usually never becomes a respected emcee.
The emcee expresses through rhyme what is already on your mind, whereas the rapper tells you all about his or her self. True emcees are encouraged to study both styles for maximum success.
