Graffiti is the street art of HipHop. To many, the writing all over buildings and public places in most of America’s major metropolitan areas is nothing more than vandalism, and well...alot of it is. But graffiti is a big part of hip hop culture, and though a sharpie scribbled on a subway wall may not be art, many of the ‘graf’ heads that practice graffiti are true artists.
Graffiti has been around for as long as humans can write. The word graffiti comes from the ancient Greek work graphien, meaning; to write. The first graffiti was done by prehistoric man on the walls of the caves they lived in, often in symbolic pictures to tell the story of a hunt or a long voyage. Thousands of years later graffiti was used to spread anti-political messages. Guerilla activists would sprawl a message in huge letters in public areas in hopes that people would recognize their cause. Graffiti as we all know it in the 21st century began with a man named Keith Harring, Harring was an artist and to promote himself and his work he would plaster posters of his unique drawings in subways and other highly trafficked places. Soon instead of using posters he would just draw directly onto the walls. This was the beginning of graffiti art.


But wait...what about the scribbled words that are so common in big cities? Well those words are called ‘tags.’ And though tagging is the least artistic form of graffiti it is also what popularized the art.
Tagging began in Philly in the 1960’s, but wasn’t popularized till it made its way to New York City. In 1971, The New York Times published an article on a person named TAKI 183. Taki 183 was a tag that first showed up in a Washington Heights neighborhood, but soon was all over the city. The Times traced the tag to a foot messenger whose nickname was Taki, and 183 was the number of the street where he lived. Taki 183 would tag the buildings where he delivered messages and also write his tag in the subway, the way he got around.


Though there were other people doing the same thing as Taki 183, the Times article gave credit to him, and soon thousands of kids began duplicating Taki’s tag in there own name. This became known as ‘bombing.’ Kids would tag the places they where at with markers at first, but then moved on to spray paint. The object was to ‘bomb’ as many places as possible, therefore having your tag be the most respected. Soon subways and back allies were filled with tags.

‘Graf’ writers soon realized that just having the most tags was not enough to stay recognized. This was the beginning of tag style. Writers began using unique ways of writing to keep there fame. Different scripts where used in different parts of New York City and soon one writer was able to know were another writer was from just by his or her tag style. This was the next step in the evolution of graffiti.
Taggers from different areas began to link up, much like breakdancers did, into crews. These crews would find the best places to tag, trying to make them the biggest and most elaborate they could get. Spray paint became the tool of choice for these graf crews. The standard spray nozzle for a can would only spray in thin lines an the graffers could not get the desired effect out of the spraypaint so, kids began removing the nozzles and replacing them with nozzles from other aresol products that would change the way the paint came out. Writers sprayed the names of there crews in block letters which they would fill with unique designs. These deigns then started to appear outside the letters and often became more important than the words. By this point tagging had metamorphosed into something far more artistic.   

These new elaborate deigns were called ‘pieces.’ Writers realized that by bombing the sides of subway cars with pieces, their work would travel around the city and be seen by everybody. Soon the entire sides of the cars where taken up by by pieces stretching from top to bottom and side to side. Some of these pieces would take hours to complete and the crews that did them would often break into train yards in order to have enough time to finish. The first top to bottom ‘masterpiece’ as it was called is attributed to one person, named SUPER KOOL 223.
Graffiti art peaked in the early 1980’s and the cities would pay thousands of dollars to clean up graffiti, but the art never died. Graffers soon stopped writing words and tags and would just spray unique pictures and designs. Many graf artists became legitimate commercial artists. From its early beginnings in Philly and New York, graffiti spread across the nation. In the 1990’s Europe had a surge of graffiti artists and pieces would show up all over Dutch and German cities. As an art form graffiti still exists and a new graf artist is born everyday, however it is unlikely that it will ever see the popularity it saw in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s.
Of the four elements of hip hop, graffiti is the only one not linked to music . Why hip hopers grasped onto graffiti as a form of expression is unknown. Perhaps it is because just like MCing is about getting your ‘props’ and being the illest lyricist, the goal of graffiti is having the best most elaborate style. Whether or not this is the reason, graffiti is still a major part of the culture as a whole.

Between Vandalism and Art Lies the Art of Graffiti!
Since its conception Graffiti has remained on the borderline between Vandalism and Pure Art.
The notion of it being vandalism stems from the Graffiti artist's choice of Canvas- Other peoples walls and property. As well as from the fact that often times too many artists can ruin a canvas and sometimes a not so good artist comes along and ruins the canvas. (non skilled Graffiti Artists etc)

Trains being one of them trains being one of the best places for graffity, as the trains would travel around the entire city exposing the art or the tag to millions from all over....Soon Graffiti as Vandalism became the view of most. lesser artists wanted the recognition of others art and would occasionally tag over artwork claiming it as their work,, this became the basis for the movie "Beat Street" Which featured Characters representative of each of the four elements of hiphop. And which helped expose millins more to the phenomenon which was to become...

GRAFFITI ART: (The study and application of street calligraphy, art and handwriting). Commonly called Aerosol Art, Writin, Piecin, Burnin, Graff and Urban Murals. Other forms of this art include Bombin and Taggin. Its practitioners are known as Writers, Graffiti writers, Aerosol artists, Graffitists and Graffiti artists.

Also at the genesis of human awareness, writing on walls, trees, stones, clothing, etc. plays an important part in the development of human intelligence and self-expression. Most inner-city children instinctively begin learning to write by writing on walls.

Ancient humans of prehistoric times would put certain berry juice in their mouths and blow or spit their images onto cave walls sometimes in total darkness just as the modern graffiti writers of the 1970s and 1980s would do with their aerosol spray cans on the sides of subway trains. 

Today, Graffiti artists seek to be masters of handwriting and art. Graffiti artists rate themselves on their ability to write and/or draw a good story. Many writers have become graphic artists, fashion designers, photographers and motion picture directors.

Know this. Graffiti as art is not vandalism!  Traditionally, the word Graffiti originated from the Italian term Graffito meaning; a scratchthus its connection with Deejayin (visual deejayin).

Graffiti was a term given to Hip Hops graphic art animation when it appeared legally and illegally on public and private properties as an act of social protest (especially on subway trains).   

Similar to the way Emceein was labeled Rap and Breakin was labeled break dancing; so it became with writin, bombin, piecin, burnin and taggin which have all come to be labeled graffiti.

Graffiti writing or drawing that is scribbled, scratched, or sprayed onto a surface.

Popularized by: Taki 183, Phase 2, Stay High 149, Kase 2, Lee, Chico, Cope 2, TATs Cru, Presweet, Iz the Wiz, Seen, Quik, O.E., Revolt, Dondi, Zephyr, Futura 2000, and others

The Art Timeline         

1929

A norwegian man  by the the name, Erik Rotheim invented around 1929 the spraycan. It was much smaller and made no noise. A couple of american cosmetics got their hands on it and the rest is history.  Go Norway

1971

The New York Times have an article on Taki 183. One of the first known tags.
He was a 17 year old teenager putting his name werever he went to get fame. They even named an award after him. Spin got the first ‘’Taki award’’ in 1973.


One of the first Graffiti crews was started, ‘’The EX Vandals’’.


Flint 707 started doing Top To Bottoms.

1972

Tracy 168, Futura 2000 and Ali starts the Graffiti crew
‘’The Soul Artists’’.


The college student Hugo Martinez starts up the organisation
‘’United Graffiti Artists’’ with goals to make fame to the writers.

Super Kool 223, makes the very first piece.
(A big throw up with colors)


The first Whole - Cars showed up.

1973

New York Magazine, gave ‘’Taki Awards’’ for best Graffiti pieces.
Spin wins for best Grand Design.

Riff makes the first Top-To-Bottom piece on a train.

Flint 707 makes the first Top-To- Bottom-Whole-Car, who coverded the whole car.

The first show with pieces was at the Razor Gallery in SoHo.

1975

The first ‘’Top to bottom whole car’’ was painted by Hondo.

1976

The first 3-D pieces showes up. King 2 was one of the first.


Two whole-cars get painted by the Fabulous Five and Caine I.

1979

The MTA invents ‘’Buffen’’ a washer machine who cleaned the trains for Graffiti.
It was very effectice, so effective that the trains started rusting, and made more damage to the trains than good work.

Graffiti painter Lee has his first exhibition in Italy.

1981

Ed Koch who was the mayor of  New York City declaims war on Graffiti. And makes a budget on total $22.4 million to build double fences with razor edge on
18 subway yards. Plus they had dogs patrolling between the double fences.
But this did not stop the Writers, as it became harder and a goal to make a train.

The most productive year of Graffiti. With a lot of 'Whole Cars'.

Knock makes the 'Style Wars ' piece.

1982

The Hip Hop movie Wild Style has cinema release. It is the first feature film about hip hop culture, and officially opened in 1983. With the movie there were a'Wild Style' tour withpeople like, Dondi, Futura, Fab 5 Freddy, Cold Crush Brothers, Busy Bee and Rock Steady Crew. The New York City Rap tour-featuring MCs, DJs, dancers, and graffiti artists-travels to London and Paris. This is the first international tour featuring hip hop culture.

Mayor Koch get dissed by Spin on a train writing ‘’Dump Koch’

1983

Michael Stewart, 25, was beaten in a arrest for writing Graffiti, and dies in the hospital. This was the first incident of police brutality.

1984

Style Wars, the Graffiti documentary by Henry Chalfant and Tony Silver
(known as the film version of the book Subway Art) is broadcast on PBS.


'Graffiti Rock', a documentary on Graffiti has premier on WPIX TV.


The famous Graffiti book Subway Art is published. It was written by
Martha Cooper and Henry Chalfant. All photos was also taken by them.

Graffiti painter Lee makes his last whole car and goes on with canvas.

1997

The comback for Hip Hop. Breakdance, Graffiti, DJ’ing and Rap as never before. 

1999

On Saturday, January 9, 1999, the first ever collaborative meet between East and West in the aerosol art world, it climaxed at Martinez Gallery.

The top aerosol writers from California arrived in NYC during the last week of December ’98. With their own history and direction, they have been busy creating new works alongside NYC’s masters of the Old School and New Skool.

This show was a "first" in the aerosol art world. The styles, colors, energy, and love involved here speak of an indigenous art form. Writers are creating and recreating their own archetypes and hieroglyphics. Site-specific works can also
be seen on the outside of an industrial complex on West 45th Street between
10th and 11th Avenues.

Graffiti = The Writing on the wall

First of all I must say that throughout all my research
and speaking with people  from the beginning
nobody really knows who started the Graffiti art.
There will always be one that did it before another...
But the art envelopment and it still does.
This is the story as I have researched it !!

Since the beginning of the human birth there has always been Graffiti. 
Off course not as we know it today as a part of Hip Hop.
But it all has it's beginning somewhere like the other elements of Hip Hop.
Graffiti throughout time has always been important for the history.
In the stone age the primitives wrote their history on the walls.
That's one of the reasons that we now know so much about their living. The Indians have been doing the same thing. Even the Maya Indians and the Egyptians.. But as the paper was invented the writing on the walls got down on to paper and the walls stayed clean for centuries. Except for some slogans painted to free somebody or to protest. Later in the late 60's and early 70's,  gangs used their tags and colors to mark their turf.

Those gangs had their own name taggers. The writers would write the gang name wherever they passed and in their own territory. They also used to write their own names. Check this out in the movie "Warriors" from 1979. Also check out the Graffiti on the trains at that time. If any of these writers were caught behind enemy lines, they would be beaten up and then sprayed with their own paint.

Some of the earliest places were at Dewitt Clinton High in the Bronx. The school was near to a Transit authority yard were out of service subway cars were stored.

The youth has always been scribbling in the subway trains, and when the spray cans arrived they soon used that. Whitch is in fact an Norwegian invention that got developed later in the states to shape what we know today.

Also a known character from the World War II were Kilroy.
Kilroy was drawn by people in the army. There wrote it to mark that the americans had been there. And everywhere they  traveled around the world they wrote, "Kilroy Was Here" This was soon adopted and used in a lot of jokes, stickers and other stuff.

Now, back to our storyline..
In the 60's Philadelphia there were two persons competing about having their name most places. They wrote Cool Earl and Cornbread all over as they were travelling. For a lot of people today these guys are are the foundation of tags/graffiti known today.

Another place in the early 70's, more close to New York there was this guy working as a city messenger named Taki. He would on his routes mark his way with the name Taki 183 after the street he lived on.   
Soon this made attention and people took notice. And it did not take long before others were doing the same. Examples like Frank 207, Joe 136, Julio 204, Barbara 62, Eva 62.
All after their street adresses.

It soon spread by the train and then it developmented from there on with bigger letters and some with filled colors. One of the first with simple letters on a train was made by Spin. when people saw this they soon started doing the same. By hitting a train thir work went city wide.

From now on there was no limits at all, it developmented fast and quickly became a phenomenon. The letters got more complicated and a lot of characters were entered. The writers started using the train stations for braging and showing black books. Later named as 'Writers Bench'.
