In Jamaica all you needed was a drum and bass. So what I did here was go right to the 'yoke'. I cut off all anticipation and played the beats. I'd find out where the break in the record was at and prolong it and people would love it. DJing exists in many types of popular music, but the DJ is especially important in the hip hop world. The DJ is the person that keeps the party going, he is the one responsible for lacing down dope beats that the MC’s can rhyme over. The first hip hop DJ was Kool Herc. In 1973, Herc was asked to DJ a party for a relative. During his set he would use two turntables and switch from record to record without cutting the music. Kool Herc was the first to use a continuos mix of music. Herc also invented the break-beat by cutting together two samples of James Brown’s hit, ‘Get on the Good Foot’. The break beat allowed dancers to have a continuos rhythm to step to. Soon Herc was doing this cutting from record to record to invent different ‘breaks’
The way Herc mixed the records was very rudimentary and often at times he was guessing about where and when to switch records. In 1974, this all changed when a DJ named Pete Jones uses a toggle switch, so that he can change which record he hears through his headphones. This made him able to match beats better and made the transitions between beats a lot smoother. DJ mixers were soon produced that had this toggle switch for headphones as well as a crossfader that allowed seamless crosses between records.
In 1977 a DJ known as Grand Wizard Theodore invented the most popular technique used by DJ’s in the hip hop world today. The ‘scratch’, so the story goes, was invented while Theodore was practicing in his room. His mother came in and while she talked to him, Theodore stopped the record by laying his hand on it. She continued talking and he started moving his hand back and forward over the record. This was the birth of the scratch. Theodore began using the scratch over other records while they played and the scratch became an instant success.

DJing is not much more than that. It has evolved some over the past twenty years, but basically is just cutting up beats and dropping scratches. Certain techniques for mixing are common, but most DJ’s know that they have to find there own style that works for them. DJing, however, is not as easy as it sounds. In fact it takes years to master just a simple scratch. The DJ is a highly coveted position in the hip hop community. Good DJ’s are paid very well to perform their talents and no rapper is any good on stage without an equal as good DJ behind him.

The DJ and Mixtapes The heart and Soul of HipHop: DJ's and Mixtapes were part of the heart and soul of Hiphop during its inception. Hip Hop started not with the MCs but rather with the DJ. It was the DJ who controlled the night, The DJ "spun "the tunes and kept the party Rocking. The DJ essentially was the Master Of Ceremonies... he was the MC. Hip Hop actually developed from Reggae Music (no not the otherway around as newbies would believe) In Jamaica and In Reggae the word DJ means to rap or talk to the crowd on the mic. and Selecta [of Music] is what they called what we consider a DJ. Many did both as did the Godfather of Hiphop DJ Kool Herc. Disc Jockeys for radio stations already had their names truncated down to just DJ and as DJ Kool Herc Did his fair share of Both Selecting and DJaying or as we know it DJing and MCing So, In America the Term For our Turntable warriors became forever embeded as DJ.
The Beggining of DJs The Very First DJs appeared as early as the 1940's during World War II as they say "necessity is the mother of invention" The need for uplifting entertainment during the war lead to the invention of the DJ as an entertainer. DJs were actually a cheaper and more efficiant means of entertaining the Troops overseas.
"During WWII, persons armed with a turntable, an armful of records, and a basic amplifier would entertain troops in mess halls, spinning Glen Miller, the Andrews sisters, and Benny Goodman. It was much easier than sending an entire band overseas." -History of Turntablism
At first DJs were just live replacements for jukeboxes which in turn were the replacements for Coverbands. The DJ Was a perfect medium between utilizing a jukebox system and hiring an expensive cover band. It was also easier and faster to set up a club for a DJ than it was to do the same for an entire band. People flocked to clubs that had DJs instead of juke boxes since the DJ Could Essentially "program the Music on the Fly"
Developement of Reggae Music Ska and Reggae Music which had been developing in Jamaica since before 1957 started evolving when King Tubby's gained access to creating "dub Plates" cheap lower quality accetate film records. He started removing vocals in certain key spots so sound sytem crews could insert their own Names, Toasts and Chants. This act of Chanting and toasting over vocal breaks became known as rapping, or papping to the crowd. As such Reggae became the predecessor to Hiphop and Rap Music. Toasting became quite popular in the Dancehalls and clubs of Jamaica and eventually made its way to America where in the Bronx a DJ By The Name of Kool Herc introduced this jamaican heritage to a new and eager crowd.
(Side Note: As far as Jamaican record-buyers are concerned, the word reggae was coined on a 1968 Pyramid dance single, "Do the Reggay (sic)," by Toots and the Maytals. )
DJ Kool Herc The Father Of Hip-Hop! "Hiphop... after dark.... They Used to Do it out in the park" Jamaican born DJ Kool Herc moved to New York in the late 1960's and brought with him the Jamaican tradition of "toasting", which involved reciting improvised rhymes over instrumental sections of reggae records. Since reggae music wasn't so well recieved in America at the time, Kool Herc used a unique playlist of R&B, Soul,Funk, and Obscure Disco Records. But he didn't just play them! During certain points of his sets he would play only the best part of each. These "best parts" would later become known as the break.

Herc used twin turntables and cut back and forth between two seperate records to create a new sound known as the Break. By mixing back and forth between the two copies the break could be doubled tripled or extended indefinately. Deconstructing and reconstructing music and other found sounds with the turntables, the foundations of Beat Juggling.This was to become the foundation for hip hop, sampling to create new music with exsisting music and also the beggining of the DJ as a musician (or Turntablist).
The word hip-hop itself was derived from the act of hip-hoppin on the turntables from one turntable to the other to create "The Breaks"

DJ KOOL HERC - The Father Of Hip Hop _____________________________________
Born in Kingston,Jamaica,West indies,moving to New York in 1967. Kool Herc owns the rights to the accolade "first Hip Hop D.J. Illustrating the connections between reggae and rap,Herc brought his sound system to block parties in the Bronx from 1969 onwards. By 1975 he was playing the brief rhythmic sections of records which would come to be termed "breaks",at venues like the Hevalo in the Bronx. His influence was pivotal,with Grandmaster Flash building on his innovations to customised the modern Hip Hop DJ approach.
Herc's methods also pre-dated,and partially introduced,sampling. By adapting pieces of Funk,Soul,Jazz and other musics into the melting pot,he would be able to keep a party buzzing. With his sound system the Herculords,he would tailor his sets to the participants,most of whom he knew by name. He would call these out over improvised sets; "As I scan the place,I see the very familiar face..of my mellow:Wallace Dee in the house! Wallace Dee! Freak for me! As one of Hip Hop's founding Fathers,Kool Herc's reputation and influence has outlasted the vaguaries of musical fashion. A status no doubt boosted by the fact that he has not attempted to launch a spurious recording career on the back of it. Kool Herc was the subject of celebration at the Rapmania Festival in 1990. Here are some words from the Father of Hip Hop: The first place I played was 1520 Sedgewick Avenue-that's a recreation room-matter of fact in my apartment,yunno. Like the pied piper,the rats came out of the bricks to dance. My parties back then was twenty-five cent, Then it went to the recreation room,then we gave a block party,one time,anual block party. When you come down the block that cleaned up,you know Herc gonna play some music,and um,I couldn't come back to the old ranch no more,I had to go to a place called the Twilight Zone.
And then I used to give flyers out over by the Hevalo,and my mans would tell me to step off. I said, "One day I"m be in here." So I gavemy first party at the Twilight Zone,it was raining,the gods was raining down on me. Everybody came down from the Hevalo,wondering what was happening. They said,"Hercis playing down the block." "Who's Herc?' "That's the guy you chased away with the flyers from outside." And from the Twilight Zone I went on up to the Hevalo...
(From there he moved to a spot called the Executive Playhouse,on 173 street in the Bronx,as well as playing numerous high schools,community centers,and parks.) Assuming his native Jamaican patois,he continues: My muddah roots come from St. Mary{a parish in Jamaica},yunno. A man named George inspirate I from Jamaica,yunno,and he lived pon Victoria Street,yunno and used to come with the big sound system. It was devastating,cause it was open air,when it rained that's the dance.... I did a lot of things from Jamaica,and I brought it here and turned it into my own little style...Herc came to prominence in the West Bronx between 1974 and 1975.

1200 The Technics SL 1200 is regarded as the best turntable for DJ'ing. The reason for this is its very, very high torque. If you hit the start/stop button, the platter will reach top speed within a 1/4th revolution. Not many turntables can match that.
Backspin Making two records repeatedly say the same stanza by pulling the records back to the same spot and release it to the speakers. This can be done very fast.
B Boy Break Boy, Bad Boy, Beat Boy etc.
Beat Juggeling Making a new beat with two record. Usually making it slower.
Cross Fader Fading switch to select the left or right turntable
Cutting Cutting up the noise in a rythmetic was with the crossfader or a cutting button.
DJ Disc Jockey, the guy that plays records for a crowd. Both Radio & Clubs.
Scratching To pull the record back and forth making a scratchy noise.
Scratch DJ A DJ who is into scratching, transforming and trix mixing.
The Crab A form of scratch making the crossfader fast back and forth while doing the scratch making a good sound.
Transform Scratch When cutting up the scratch and cutting up the record back and forth.
Turntableist The DJ is an artist making new sounds using the turntables as instruments. A lots of skills and tricks.
